As i already mentioned, this page is to share some interesting facts and information. Not just about the Critters, but Charleston and South Carolina. So here we go!
Wrenny is a Carolina Wren, the South Carolina state bird. Considering there are six categories (land birds, marsh birds, coastal birds, game birds, raptors and wading birds) and over 400 species in the state, it’s quite the honor! The State Legislature enact a law, but the process begins with a group of interested people. In Wrenny’s case, the South Carolina Federated Women’s Clubs started the ball rolling. Let’s applaud these ladies who appreciate such a distinctive bird!
Here’s where it becomes more interesting. The Carolina Wren was originally passed by in favor of the mockingbird. However, in the late 1940’s, the State Legislature recognized a true South Carolinian, no matter how small, and the Carolina Wren was adopted as the state bird.
Hooray! Or as Wrenny would say “tea-ket-tle, tea-ket-tle”!
